GENERIC PACKING LISTS

Important stuff

  • Cash, credit cards, debit cards, travelers checks
  • Photo ID or passport, vaccination documents
  • Documentation required for leaving the country with a minor, if necessary.
  • Airplane tickets/e-Ticket information
  • Itinerary with confirmation numbers
  • Health/Travel insurance documentation
  • Maps, directions, phone numbers of hotels, transportation hubs and rent-a-car agencies
  • Membership cards: AAA, Frequent Flier programs, etc.
  • Any coupons
  • Emergency phone numbers

Clothing

  • Socks and underwear for the number of days of the trip, plus two.
  • Short sleeved shirts, T-shirts, tank tops for warm climates
  • Long sleeved T-shirts, long underwear, turtle necks, sweaters, sweatshirt for cold climates
  • One long sleeve durable lightweight, light colored cotton shirt
  • Lightweight or heavy slacks, depending on destination's climate
  • Jeans
  • Shorts/skirts
  • Bathing suit (more than one if you are swimming frequently)
  • Rain gear, rain coat, umbrella, poncho
  • Good walking shoes, hiking boots, sandals, sneakers
  • Bandanas
  • One nice outfit
  • Necessary amount of belts, costume jewelry, scarves, etc.
  • Pajamas/sleep wear
  • Sunglasses, hat
  • Warm hat, gloves and scarf is destination is cold. (Bring extra mittens, my daughter always looses hers.)

Personal toiletries

  • Toothbrush/Toothpaste/Dental Floss
  • Shampoo/Conditioner/special soap
  • Shaving gear
  • Moisturizing lotion
  • Tissues (in case there is no toilet paper)
  • Hand wipes
  • Hair gel, mouse, spray, etc.
  • Hair bands/clips
  • Nail clippers (must be checked to do post 9-11 regulations), polish, polish remover, file, etc.
  • Contact lenses paraphernalia/glasses
  • Make up
  • Feminine hygiene products

Other items

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Small-size sewing kit
  • All purpose pocket knife (must be checked to do post 9-11 regulations)
  • Sink stopper for soaking laundry
  • Small roll of electrical tape (comes in handy for a myriad of things, including binding up gifts to take home)
  • One large plastic trash bag (handy for lots of things including covering your luggage when it rains)
  • Gallon and quart-sized zip-lock plastic bags (handy for packing things that might leak, wet bathing suits, crayons, etc.)
  • First-aid kit
  • Binoculars
  • Water bottles
  • Camera/camcorder, batteries, lots of film
  • Stamps for postcards
  • Clock radio
  • Personal music devices for escapist teens
  • Extra batteries for anything else that needs batteries
  • Notebook or journal
  • Walkie-talkies

  • Calculator (for foreign currency exchange rates and negotiation in foreign languages)
